Mount Rushmore Wastewater Treatment Expansion

The Mount Rushmore Wastewater Treatment Plant is undergoing a major rehabilitation and expansion to better serve the more than 3 million annual visitors who experience this iconic national landmark.

This essential infrastructure project will modernize and expand the existing wastewater treatment system, increasing capacity to handle higher flow volumes and improving overall treatment efficiency. The upgraded facility will ensure reliable and environmentally responsible service that supports all park operations—including visitor services, concessions, staff housing, law enforcement, maintenance, and administrative functions.

When complete, the improved system will enhance operational sustainability, protect surrounding natural resources, and help preserve the beauty and integrity of Mount Rushmore National Memorial for generations to come.
