Yates Shaft Rehabilitation

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority contracted RCS Construction, Inc. to rehabilitate the Yates Shaft, preparing it for scientific research taking place 5,000 feet underground. The project included the removal of existing utilities within the shaft, followed by the installation of new, updated systems designed to support advanced experiments and long-term operations.

In addition, the shaft's timber was carefully cleaned, inspected, tested, and replaced where necessary to ensure safety and structural integrity. The work required detailed planning and execution in a challenging underground environment, with a strong focus on safety and reliability. The project employed approximately 20 experienced miners, many of whom previously worked at the Homestake Mine, bringing valuable knowledge and expertise to the effort.

Their experience played a key role in successfully completing the work and maintaining high standards throughout the project. These improvements transformed the Yates Shaft into a modern, research-ready facility, supporting ongoing scientific discovery and contributing to the continued use of a historic site for innovative purposes.
